It’s that time when Pantone releases its Colour of the Year. For many homeowners and interior designers, this announcement will influence the trends they incorporate into their homes over the next 12 months. 2021’s Colour of the Year is PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating. Pantone describes the 2021 Colour of the Year as, ‘a marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting’.

The thinking behind the two colours that have been selected for 2021 is to display how two independent colours and elements can come together and support each other – this is particularly apt given the year we’ve all just experienced! The combination displays the rock-solid and practicality of the grey and the positivity and strength of the yellow.

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of The Pantone Color Institute explains:

“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

Incorporating Pantone’s 2021 Colour of the Year into your kitchen

Whilst some colour trends do filter down into themes for the cabinetry itself, due to the initial outlay of a kitchen and the expense required to update it, it’s less common to see changes in kitchens from year to year. However, where possible, we do find that our customers like to try and stay on top of the latest interior design trends, which means being creative in the way they apply these seasonal changes. Soft furnishings, such as blinds or cushions can be easily replaced to fit the latest colour trends. Alternatively, you can opt to update your crockery or cookware to reflect the trend, or simply just adding a new table lamp, vase and accessories to a neutral room can make a bold statement.

No doubt homeware and interiors brands will be finding ways to use the new on-trend colours, making it easy to add splashes throughout your home.
